Halfdan Hussey

Co-Founder & Director

Halfdan (halllf' den) Hussey - Director's Bio

At twenty-two, after earning Summa Cum Laude in Lit and studying film, Halfdan wrote his first screenplay while driving a cab in New York City. Halfdan then directed and co-produced a truly independent feature, He's Still There, that opened to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival, Italy. The film was a hit at the Critic's section of the festival. Soon thereafter he directed Still Waters Burn.

"I really like Still Waters Burn. Its young director shows brilliant promise and talent." - Robert Wise (Four time Academy Award Winner; legendary director of The Day The Earth Stood Still, West Side Story, Sound of Music)

"Strength comes from the people involved and how great their passion and skills are. The leaders of Cinequest have both of those. That's why it's been with us for some time and will still be here long into the future." - Steve Wozniak (Co-Founder, Apple Inc).

Halfdan then co-founded and developed the Cinequest Film Institute (Cinequest Distribution and Cinequest Film Festival) in the Silicon Valley to empower creativity and innovation. Having stayed ahead in digital film making, exhibition and distribution for years, The Ultimate Guide to Film Festivals, named Cinequest in the Top 10 amongst the world's 2,000 festivals and deemed Cinequest the place where you "find the future of film". A pioneer in digital distribution and marketing, Cinequest created a successful distribution division to further its work in delivering award winning films to fans in DVD, Internet and Internet Television.

Halfdan was named one of the top 25 people who dramatically changed the Silicon Valley over the past 25 years by Metro Newspapers 2010.

Recently Halfdan returned to writing and movie making. His debut book, TO THE DOGS, tells the dramatic story of a man who leaves a world of integrity to fall into one of crime, leaving his sons with an inheritance of corrupt power. The sons must decide whether to continue the ways of their father or return to the world of dogs, the land of unconditional love and inner power.

Cinequest has formed a sister company, Cinequest Mavericks Studio LLC, to make and market A-list movies utilizing ground-breaking media and technology platforms.

Halfdan continues to balance his creative work and business with a lifelong passion to empower others to create and live the lives of their dreams. He works with Cinequest Picture the Possibilities to inspire youth around the globe and to connect their visions of a better tomorrow, through film, to leaders. He has developed an empowerment program and accompanying book called THE 7 POWERS, the powers to create anything.

"Ultimately, "He's Still There" is a sincerely great movie full of feeling and aspirations. Halfdan Hussey demonstrates not only an idea but also a remarkable ability to translate an idea to film. Halfdan Hussey is not only a 'goodfella' but a young bravo regazzo. Above all he is a bravo regista (great director)." --Francesco Carrara, Venice Film Festival (Il Piccolo)

Kathleen Powell

Co-Founder & President

As Cinequest Film Institute celebrates its 23rd anniversary next February, much of its success can be accredited to Kathleen J. Powell, a woman who's combined her unique background in engineering and art to successfully grow an idea into a flourishing business. Kathleen Powell is the Co-Founder and President of Cinequest, a Silicon Valley institute and recognized leader in fostering digital technologies and new distribution models that empower Maverick film artists through art and innovation.

Not only has she succeeded in growing a vibrant film institute economically over the last 22 years, she has also empowered youth through the development of diverse programs related to film. This led to her ultimate success that serves as encouragement for millions of women striving to make a difference and impact on this world. Kathleen has been recognized as an innovative, determined, and charismatic role model for women in business.

Previously, Kathleen was Vice President of Worldwide Programming at Jaman, a socially-conscious online film distribution portal. While at Jaman, she led the company's content acquisitions and programming capacities. Kathleen's technology background includes a 17 year track record at Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies, where she served in a variety of management roles including R&D, Business Development and Quality Management.

Kathleen holds a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Business Administration from Kansas State University. This extraordinary recipe of a Business background combined with her artistic abilities has enabled Kathleen to become the successful film producer she is today. Her extensive experience in film includes producing and executive producing three feature films.

The first independent feature film she produced He's Still There premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival. After experiencing the passion of international film lovers combined with the Venice hospitality it was Kathleen's ambition to bring this appreciation of the arts to the Silicon Valley, and add the power of technology. And this is precisely what she did in 1990 with Halfdan Hussey.

She later independently produced and executive produced the provocative Seizing Me, a powerful and beautiful psychological thriller about a disturbed woman who refuses to look inside herself for fulfillment and thus decides to take what she wants from others—mind, body and soul.

Kathleen's diverse experiences in both Fortune 100 companies as well as the challenging world of Independent films gives her a unique ability which she has leveraged for countless years of success.

Named one of the 25 people who dramatically changed the Silicon Valley over the past 25 years by Metro Newspapers 2010.

(I love any activity that drives me to grow kilometer by kilometer, especially martial arts, dance, literature, and cinematography. All the mentioned activities were and are causes of my happiness, as they help me find my “special space”.)

What I want to be in the future: Quiero ser una activista social, pienso lograrlo preparándome y accionando en todas los caminos que se me vallan presentando.

(I want to be a social activist. I think I can accomplish this by preparing myself and taking action on all the opportunities that are presented to me and taking advantage of them.)

(I want to be a founder of an international educational institution where exceptional youth in different practices come together in a school to work together (United World Colleges is my inspiration). Currently, I would like to create more shorts with my sister and be able to produce them. I would also love to study aboard.)

What I love doing: I love all things related to art: acting, modeling, singing, dancing, listening to music as well as appreciating drawings and paintings.

What I want to be in the future: I have a lot of goals for the future, including becoming a lawyer for individuals with special needs, as well as becoming an advocate for Autism Awareness. On the side, I hope to pursue philanthropic work and other humanitarian efforts.

What I want to create in my life: I think it would be cool to start my own foundation after my brother, but I think if there is anything I can do within the next few years its create a life in the entertainment industry with my older brother Alston who is an awesome filmmaker and photographer.

What I love doing: I am very passionate about many things, one being dance. Being a dancer is such an important piece of me, enabling me to express my feelings in a way that people can emotionally connect with. Another passion of mine is acting. I’ve participated in more than 20 theatre productions in my life, and hope to become an on-screen actress as well as a stage performer.

What I want to be in the future: I usually have about 10 different ideas of what I want to do when I grow up: I’d like to be a circus performer doing hand balancing in Cirque Du Soleil; the first astronomer to find life outside of earth; a traveling cruise ship dancer; and, one of my favorites -- playing the cute “bad” girl in an action movie.

What I want to create in my life: Some things I want to create are films that present characters in more realistic scenarios, touching not only the hearts of the young, but those of all ages. I’d also love to create a dance studio that offers all types of dance, welcoming those of all ages, size, and gender.

(I like music production, community projects guided by Hip Hop culture, and lastly poetry because I think they all are necessary ties and a strong base for marginalized communities to use, since these are organic ways of communication.)

What I want to be in the future: Quiero estar trabajando con las comunidades periféricas de distintos países para crear lazos.

(I want to work with marginalized communities in different countries to create ties between them. But I would also like to continue to create filmmaking projects as it is one of my main personal projects.)

What I want to create in my life: En este momento estoy por terminar un proyecto musical de Hip Hop.

(In this moment I am in the process of finalizing a Hip Hop music project. Next is the creation of a book of anecdotes which have pushed me to lean on the flight of art. As a second plan for the future, I will create a film that talks about the marginalized societies in Mexico City and how music is a factor that helps a person share their everyday creating a sense of community.)
